Historic Day

Election 2008
I am excited and blessed to see the election of the first black president of the USA. I watched the reactions on TV of African Americans, some of them with tears in their eyes. This is more than just an election, it's a symbol of how far we have come as a nation--from slavery, to electing the first black president. But we still have a long way yet to go...

The First Thanksgiving was also a symbol of racial unity. There had been animosity between the Indian people and the European people (with good reason...the European people had been stealing Indian people and making them slaves. I would have been nervous to see a European ship, too, if I were an Indian). But the Pilgrims of the Mayflower and their Native American neighbors not only overcame animosity, but helped each other out. That first Thanksgiving they came together to give thanks for each other. Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on things we are grateful for, and recognize that which is important. Things like family, liberty, food and shelter, spirituality...all things the Pilgrims and Indians both shared, things that cross all racial boundaries.
