Adoption seminar

We had an adoption seminar tonight. The adoption agency is in Colorado, so those out of state join by conference call. The owner and his wife are both from China. He speaks good English, but it was a little hard to understand him on the phone with his accent. He is very passionate about his job of giving orphans homes. He said the reasons why the adoption wait is so long (about 30 months right now) is because: a lot of Americans want to adopt from China, not as many babies are being abandoned as before because the country is not as poor as it was, and more Chinese families are wanting to adopt (he said before Chinese people just did not talk about adoption). They ended up having so many people wanting to adopt that it was flooding the system, so they made new restrictions, such as no single parents, etc. May 2007. Still, most of the children will not be adopted because most of them are special needs children. He said that most of the "adoptable" children will be adopted. He and his wife adopted a 9 year old girl with a heart defect, but they also have biological twins. He also talked about their agency. It sounds like a really good one, they focus just on Chinese adoptions, and they even have a cultural education center and summer camps and get togethers. He said he calls all of the children "his daughters." I started filling out the initial application. We can send it in Nov. 30.
P.S. He talked about when he grew up in China, their family was very poor. He had a brother and a sister. They were hungry a lot, no one had cars, only certain people had phones and he made $7 a month. He came to this country with $15 and 3 pair of underwear. He said when his friend heard that he was coming to the U.S.A. he said that he was so lucky, that he heard they are so rich in the US that (it was a little fuzzy to hear) something like you can find money laying on the highways. We are lucky to live in this country!
